Move Over MyPyramid. Hello MyPlate.

“MyPlate” has replaced MyPyramid as the new symbol for healthy eating.  The “MyPlate” symbol aims to show healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated.  Even though there is a new symbol, the recommendations for healthy eating remain virtually unchanged.  It is important that we enjoy our food and balance calories by enjoying smaller amounts of food.  As well as limit foods high in sodium, added sugars, and refined grains.       For more information check out the following resources.

Live Well Omaha – Healthy Food Options for Everyone

Our partnership between grocery stores to provide healthier food options for people in all parts of Omaha has hit the ground running.  Through federal funding UNL Extension is part of the Live Well Omaha: Douglas County Putting Prevention to Work project.  UNL Extension is providing nutrition education and monthly food demonstrations.  Currently we are educating in three stores (JNJ, JND and LaGuera) and five more stores are in the works. Teaching Cooking IS Important!

I teach healthy eating concepts.  I am a dietitian.  I believe you cannot teach nutrition without discussing food preparation!  This has been a missed concept for many years by many nutrition experts.   Probably why we have been nicknamed food Nazi’s!  All foods do fit, and cooking IS important!
