Live Well Omaha – Healthy Food Options for Everyone

Our partnership between grocery stores to provide healthier food options for people in all parts of Omaha has hit the ground running.  Through federal funding UNL Extension is part of the Live Well Omaha: Douglas County Putting Prevention to Work project.  UNL Extension is providing nutrition education and monthly food demonstrations.  Currently we are educating in three stores (JNJ, JND and LaGuera) and five more stores are in the works.

At JNJ a series of fruit and vegetable food demonstrations and taste testing have been conducted.  It has been very well received from the store customers and it has them coming back every week for another healthy food tasting.  One customer stated, “You cannot imagine the impact of what you are doing in our community.”  Another customer’s child tried and enjoyed the broccoli and cauliflower so much that they purchased all of the grab and go packages of broccoli and cauliflower.

At LaGuera customers have been sampling low fat milk and were surprised when they couldn’t tell the difference between 1% fat milk and 2% fat milk.  Many stated that they will start purchasing 1% low-fat milk for their family.
