Where the Healthy Choice is the Easy Choice

“Live Well Omaha: Douglas County Putting Prevention to Work,” has a singular vision: to create a physical and cultural environment that maximizes the ability of all residents of Omaha and Douglas County to eat healthier foods and to be physically active, at any time and in any place. We are creating a community where the healthy choice is the easy choice.
Through this movement UNL Extension in Douglas/Sarpy Counties has been able to hire a Registered Dietitian to work on one of the seven identified initiative, “Healthy Stores Omaha.” The
seven identified initiatives:
Safe Routes to School
Bike Walk Omaha
Farm-to-School
Movin’ After School
Healthy Stores Omaha
School Gardens
Partners for a Healthy City
The Healthy Stores Omaha movement is working to ensure that corner and convenience stores in all of our neighborhoods offer affordable, nutritious food selections to customers. To begin, eight neighborhood grocery stores will be identified in high need areas. Healthy Stores Omaha will provide: training and education for retailers on food handling and preparation, nutrition education in stores and in the neighborhood, and promotional materials for store owners to raise neighborhood awareness.
UNL Extension has also been recognized as a “Partner for a Healthy City,” as a result of our pledge to implement at least one policy related to increased physical activity and/or healthy food and beverage choices at our office. For example two times per week we host an exercise activity during the lunch hour. Such as exercise videos or walks around the building. We are also working on getting more healthful options in our vending machines.
