Gardening in Omaha

Rain + Sun + Heat= Great Plant Growth!   That’s what has been going on this week! We had over two inches of rain in the past week, and the temperature has been at least 70°F.  This is perfect weather for plants to grow!  I went back yesterday to help plant our tomatoes, broccoli and egg plant.  The enthusiasm of the kids and their teachers was incredible!  Almost everything we planted from seeds last week came up.  The radishes are about 1

Rain Rain Go Away!

  Rain can be a friend or foe to a gardener.  Last week it was definitely a foe!  A few days it was close to 100 degrees (yes it’s May in Nebraska!) and then the rest of the week it rained like cats and dogs!  Lows now in the upper 30’s!   You have to love spring in the Midwest! Gardening with Child Care Children

We did it!  We won the Welch’s Harvest Grant from Welch’s, as part of a program with Scholastic and the National Gardening Association.  We received $500 worth of gardening equipment and curriculum to start raised beds at St. Bernard’s Child Care in Omaha.  We are working with two horticulturists and a master gardener from the UNL Extension Office, and myself, and RD.  The kids are going to raise veggies this summer, and learn that food comes from somewhere besides the
