Pinterest and Bread Making Trends
I am a recipe junkie. I have blogged about this many times. I still tear recipes out of magazines and off the internet. My fridge is full of recipes to try. The door may fall off soon if I don’t clear it. One thing I am proud of is my recipe collection on Pinterest. It is not bothering anyone or taking up any space at my house. It always looks nice and is ready for me whenever I need it, and others can use it too! Winner-winner chicken dinner! (I bet there’s a recipe for that in my files!)
Last week I spent a lot of time waiting for a flight, so I perused the general Pinterest site. What I found was interesting—people want to make bread from scratch, but do not want to go through the entire kneading event or even the bread machine route. I found a recipe that I saved on how to bake a loaf of bread on your grill in an iron skillet. I saved it, as who doesn’t want fresh bread in the summer, without heating up the house! The other recipe I found was one you cook in your Dutch Oven. I have a beautiful Red Dutch Oven just like the picture! It is a Le Creuset. I believe it makes me a better cook! It was a birthday gift from my husband! I love it. If you are a foodie—kitchen gifts are the best!
I digress. This recipe looked simple—mix, let sit overnight, then place in the hot Dutch Oven and bake. Wow—so easy. So I made it. Oh goodness—was it good! The outside was very crispy and brown, and the inside was airy and oh so soft! It was just screaming to be eaten! I didn’t follow the recipe completely, as I ground up my rosemary in my coffee grinder. I do not like to chew whole pieces of rosemary. It worked well, except it made the loaf look kind of grey inside. It still tasted wonderful! I am thinking of experimenting with garlic and other herbs. If you have a minute—give this a try—it is well worth your time!
- ◾3 cups all-purpose flour
- ◾1¾ tsp sea salt
- ◾½ tsp active dry yeast
- ◾1½ cups room temperature water
- ◾¾ cup chopped fresh rosemary
- Instructions
- In a large bowl mix flour, sea salt and yeast together. Mix in the water and use a spatula to blend until well combined.
- Cover the bowl and allow to sit on the counter overnight, at least 12 hours. (patience is a virtue!)
- Preheat oven to 450 F degrees. While oven is heating, place your Dutch Oven in the oven to allow it to preheat as well.
- Remove pot from oven and remove the lid from it.
- Flour your work surface as well as hands. Remove your dough from the bowl and form into a ball. This is a no knead recipe, but you may have to fold it a couple times to get it to form the shape you want. Place the dough into the bottom of your Dutch Oven (be careful not to burn your hands, the cast iron will be HOT!)
- Bake for 30 minutes with the lid on, then remove the lid and bake another 15-20 minutes until the bread is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Cut and serve! Perfect complement for soups!
