The Importance of School Breakfast

National School Breakfast Week is March 2-6, 2015.  The theme is “Make the Grade with School Breakfast.” It highlights how eating a nutritious breakfast helps students achieve success in the classroom and beyond.

Eric P Nelson is a guest blogger this week and Principal at Fontenelle Elementary here in Omaha, Nebraska.  He writes “The school bell rings and hundreds of eager students are moving swiftly through the breakfast line anxiously awaiting the healthy meal they are about to put into their “grab-n-go” bag.  School breakfast is offered all over the State of Nebraska and participation continues to rise every year.  Children everywhere are able to start the day in a calm, relaxed atmosphere that is filled with opportunities to talk with peers, academic intervention groups, one on one time with their teacher, and various other strategies.  The children are showing up on time, on task and ready to learn.  I believe that school breakfast is the ultimate beginning to a productive “bell-to-bell” day that includes academic success, social and emotional stability and food security.”
