4-H Invest an Acre Grant

4-H Invest An Acre, and the Howard Buffett Foundation are working together to provide grants to local 4-H clubs and counties to combat local hunger. By teaming up with Invest An Acre, 4-H can reach out to the people who grow the food for our nation.

I am lucky enough to be able to work with St. Bernard’s Child Care, Troop 380, and the Extension Office in Douglas/Sarpy Counties with this grant.  We built 4 raised beds this week and planted vegetables and herbs in them to be utilized by the child care and their parents.

Over the summer, the child care staff and children will tend the gardens, and have weekly tasting parties with the produce that they grow.  They will also learn about watering and weeding, and where their food REALLY comes from!

Later this summer, Troop 380 will come back and place a watering system in the beds, and erect a bench, some arbors and some perennial plantings near the beds.  It will then be dedicated as the St. Nicholas Children’s Garden.  A garden to be utilized for years by an small inner city school!
