I am a Mom. I am a dietitian. I have kids. We drink milk. Not just some milk–we drink a LOT of milk. The kids are out for summer now, and it seems like even with all of their summer events–we have ramped up the amount we drink. A normal grocery trip will bring 8 gallons of skim home. That doesn’t seem to be cutting it anymore. Our oldest son drinks milk after coming home from football lifting every morning. All the kids have a glass of milk before they head out in the morning. They have milk at meals and sometimes as a snack. Skim milk rocks!
I have a family history of osteoporosis, so it is important to me that my family drink milk! In honor of National Dairy’s Council 100 year anniversary, I asked my kids what they loved about milk, and my husband too! Here is what we came up with:
- It tastes good! We drink skim–white or chocolate–doesn’t matter–we all love the way it tastes.
- My husband says it quenches his thirst and it fills him up.
- I think it goes well with meals, and cookies!
- Our oldest son said it was good for his muscles after he works out for football.
- Our youngest son says it tastes great on cereal.
- Our daughter likes it frozen (ice cream!)–I’ll give her the fact that it’s a dairy product–and I love ice cream too!
- I appreciate that it is a great source of protein and calcium and Vitamin D.
- It is an inexpensive protein for the nutrients consumed.
- It is a local product–coming from within 100 miles of my house.
- It is provided to my family by caring dairy farmers who take excellent care of their herds.
I can think of many more reasons why we love milk, but 10 is a start. What do you love about milk?
