Fuel Up To Play 60

The childhood obesity rate continues to increase to epidemic proportions.  Adult diseases are starting to show up in our children.  I am preaching to the choir!  We all are aware, and health care professionals are trying!  The age old saying—eat healthy, and exercise has been replaced by living in the fast-food lane and electronic everything—including exercise.  For many reasons, kids eat less than healthy foods and do not exercise.  This has to change, and is not always possible to make the change at home.  This is where schools come in, and Fuel Up to Play 60.

Fuel Up to Play 60 encourages youth to eat healthy and move more — and studies suggest that well-nourished, physically active kids can be better students.  The Fuel Up to Play 60 website  contains information on why healthier students do better in school and feel better about themselves.  Joining is easy, so is being a school adviser.  Applying for their grants to help your school out is even easier.   You do not have to be a nutritionist to apply for grants or be an adviser.  A gym teacher, principal or school nurse can join and apply.

St. Bernard Catholic School was recently awarded $4000 to increase activity at school and improve the nutritional aspects of school lunch.  Larry Asante from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to our school to present our check.  He used to play for Nebraska.  He is an incredible person!  I am their adviser.  It’s not hard or time consuming.  It’s great fun, and means such a great deal to schools.

My challenge to you, fine reader, is to consider joining up with a school to help them apply to be a Fuel Up to Play 60 school.  It’s a win-win situation.  Maybe your school will get an NFL star to come out!  Let me know if you’ve helped out a school—if everyone interested took on one school—the US population of children would be so much better off!
