Eating on Vacation

Vacation-I’m pretty sure the definition reads something like relaxing, enjoyable, maybe even unforgettable.  Have you ever ridden in the car for 12 hours with three kids under the age of nine?  This gives a different definition to vacationing.  When it was just the two of us on vacation, we’d stop at a rest stop and have a nice picnic lunch or dinner that I packed in a cooler.  Fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, something to drink and a blanket under a tree.  Much healthier and less expensive than stopping for fast food.  It gave us a chance to get out of the car, and feel refreshed when we got back in to drive some more.

Part of vacationing is eating out.  We did this also.  We planned on eating at certain special restaurants.  We ate a lot of seafood.  It was great!  Even the kids enjoyed it.  Joe’s Crab Shack in Kemah was yummy, and yes, we had fries.  I believe in moderation, and everything fits.  We also had planned on eating at a local restaurant/bar that has a web cam, called The Spot.  We showed the kids the web cam, and that you could watch the ocean while eating, and our relatives back home could watch us eat!  Pretty cool!  The Spot also had great local seafood.  It was very fun.

The whole point is that no one ate fast food every day.  We had a variety of foods, especially local fare.  When we did eat fast food, the kids asked for milk and fruit, so the corn dogs and chicken fingers were balanced.  Planning ahead made our eating healthier and less expensive.  We splurged with calories and money when it was important to us.  Also, we balanced our meals with lots of time spent on the beach.  No one complained!  I hope your summer vacation turns out as nice!
