{"id":800,"date":"2009-03-16T20:37:47","date_gmt":"2009-03-17T02:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=800"},"modified":"2013-08-23T14:15:47","modified_gmt":"2013-08-23T14:15:47","slug":"brand-name-vs-generic-can-you-tell-the-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/e\/brand-name-vs-generic-can-you-tell-the-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"Brand Name vs. Generic &#8211; Can You Tell the Difference?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On a recent rainy Sunday afternoon, my husband and I wanted to get out of the house.\u00a0 I had writer&#8217;s block trying to think of a fun topic for this blog and our daughter needed some entertainment beyond Mom and Dad.\u00a0 After tossing around several ideas, we came up with the brilliant idea of going to our local supercenter store that has covered parking and buying the brand name and generic versions of various food products. \u00a0(You think I&#8217;m kidding &#8211; I&#8217;m not.)\u00a0 We then came home and taste tested them to see if we could tell the difference.\u00a0 We had a blast!\u00a0 Here are our results.<\/p>\n<p>We bought the brand name and generic versions of woven wheat crackers, saltines, potato chips, pasta sauce, raisin bran, flavored instant oatmeal, and toaster waffles.\u00a0 We presented each other dishes labeled &#8220;A&#8221; and &#8220;B&#8221; with a small amount of each food product so we didn&#8217;t know which was the brand name.\u00a0 I told my husband he didn&#8217;t have to close his eyes but he warned me that, &#8220;I eat raisin bran all the time, so I&#8217;ll know which is the brand name.\u00a0 Same with the saltines and potato chips, I&#8217;ll know which is which.&#8221;\u00a0 I smiled as I thought to myself, &#8220;Sure you will.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We first tried the woven wheat crackers.\u00a0 They looked and tasted nearly identical.\u00a0 The brand name crackers were a bit squarer in shape and tasted a bit saltier to me although the packages listed the same amount of sodium.\u00a0 If I hadn&#8217;t been eating them side-by-side, they&#8217;d taste exactly the same.\u00a0 For a savings of $1.20, the generic wins hands down.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wovenwheat\" alt=\"wovenwheat\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/wovenwheat.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">Which is the brand name?\u00a0 Answer: B<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>For the saltines, my husband confessed they tasted exactly the same.\u00a0 But he swore that he&#8217;d had generic saltines that tasted worse&#8230;&#8221;Or that could all be in my head.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0For me, I had to have my husband bring three rounds of saltines before I decided I did like one of them better which turned out to be the brand name.\u00a0 But how often do I concentrate that hard on figuring out which saltine I like better?\u00a0 Never.\u00a0 So again, the generic wins at a savings of $1.27.<\/p>\n<p>For the potato chips, my husband confidently said he liked &#8220;B&#8221;, the brand name chips, better.\u00a0 I told him those were the generic chips.\u00a0 He was shocked&#8230;and then laughed.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll be saving 51 cents a bag now.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"chips\" alt=\"chips\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/chips.jpg\" width=\"261\" height=\"141\" \/><\/td>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"raisinbran\" alt=\"raisinbran\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cereal.jpg\" width=\"298\" height=\"140\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">Which chips are brand name? Answer: B<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">Can you guess the brand name cereal?
