{"id":520,"date":"2007-08-28T15:33:30","date_gmt":"2007-08-28T20:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.k2concepts.com\/~nutritio\/wordpress\/?p=29"},"modified":"2013-08-26T18:13:08","modified_gmt":"2013-08-26T18:13:08","slug":"bag-a-safe-lunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/e\/bag-a-safe-lunch\/","title":{"rendered":"Bag A Safe Lunch!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Packing a lunch your child will eat and not trade is tough.\u00a0 Packing a safe lunch is not.\u00a0 I find that following a few simple guidelines keeps my kid\u2019s lunches safe.<\/p>\n<p>Start out your lunch preparation with clean hands, a clean counter, and a clean lunch container.\u00a0 Insulated containers (better than paper) and lunch boxes need to be cleaned daily with hot soapy water.\u00a0 Check all of your expiration dates\u2014expired food is bad!<\/p>\n<p>Now you\u2019re ready to choose your food items.\u00a0 Remember that food cannot remain at room temperature for more than two hours before it becomes unsafe.\u00a0 So either pack non-perishable items (like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches) or keep the foods hot\/cold.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anything taken out of the fridge needs to be kept cold (41\u00b0or lower)\n<ul>\n<li>Use and ice\/gel pack, frozen milk in a plastic container, ice cubes in a baggie, a frozen juice box, a thermos, freeze your sandwich the night before, or freeze water in a leak proof container<\/li>\n<li>Refrigerate things the night before so that they are cold<\/li>\n<li>Have your child keep their lunch in a refrigerator or at least someplace cool and out of the sun<\/li>\n<li>Purchase milk at school<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Anything taken out of the oven\/microwave needs to be kept hot (135\u00b0 or higher)\n<ul>\n<li>Use a thermos to keep soups and casseroles hot<\/li>\n<li>Heat up items like chicken nuggets in the morning, and place them in a hot thermos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, remind your student to wash their hands before lunch.\u00a0 If this is not possible\u2014then include a wet wipe and a napkin.\u00a0\u00a0 A quick message of encouragement for the day on the napkin will be a nice surprise!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Packing a lunch your child will eat and not trade is tough.\u00a0 Packing a safe lunch is not.\u00a0 I find that following a few simple guidelines keeps my kid\u2019s lunches safe.
