{"id":3654,"date":"2012-01-17T15:51:32","date_gmt":"2012-01-17T21:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=3654"},"modified":"2013-08-07T21:14:32","modified_gmt":"2013-08-07T21:14:32","slug":"portion-size-knowledge-versus-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/e\/portion-size-knowledge-versus-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Portion Size&#8211;Knowledge versus Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.666666984558105px;\">Recently, I purchased a children\u2019s meal from a fast food restaurant.\u00a0 It came with a burger, fries and apple slices.\u00a0 The burger seemed a proper portion, and the apple slices were about half a medium apple.\u00a0 All OK.\u00a0 The fries were SMALL!\u00a0 There were about 10-15 French fries in the tiny container.\u00a0 Now\u2014I purchased this type of meal for numerous reasons\u2014it is lower in calories (and Weight Watchers points!), it is less expensive, and the portions are more realistic.\u00a0 So, I should have gone back through the drive-through and thanked them!\u00a0 Instead\u2014I just pondered what a serving size of fries really is????<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the USDA, a serving of French Fries is about 10.\u00a0\u00a0 10!\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 I knew tater tots were the same.\u00a0 So, I checked the nutrition of the small versus the \u201cregular\u201d size fries\u2014small contains 100 calories, the regular size\u2014380 calories.\u00a0 This explains the obesity epidemic very nicely.\u00a0 Large is the new normal as far as serving sizes go.\u00a0 Get more value for your money by going to an \u201call you care to eat\u201d restaurant.\u00a0\u00a0 Larger plates; piles of food.\u00a0 This is what we have all decided is normal.\u00a0 We have come to expect it.<\/p>\n<p>I try and have my children check serving sizes on their favorite foods.\u00a0 Hmm\u2026cereal\u2014about \u00be &#8211;
