Did you sanitize your food prep area before making dinner?\u00a0 Are your dishes really clean?\u00a0 Did you just scratch your head, and then make a sandwich?\u00a0 It really is that quick.\u00a0 One slip-up and someone can get sick.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you eat raw cookie dough?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The raw eggs could cause salmonella, and a quick bite could land you in the hospital.\u00a0 Take the <a href=\"http:\/\/homefoodsafety.org\/pages\/kids\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">raw cookie pledge\u00a0<\/a> before you bake next time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you wash your produce before eating it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not washing your produce with cold running water and a brush (if needed) could set you up for botulism.\u00a0 Leafy greens and anything that grows in the ground or on top could have these problems.\u00a0 Wash your produce just before eating it.\u00a0 Washing it ahead of time and storing it will cause it to spoil quicker.\u00a0 For more produce safety tips, go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/homefoodsafety.org\/pages\/tips\/tips\/produce_safe.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Home Food Safety page. <\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you wash your hands every time they are contaminated?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not washing your hands before food preparation or after cracking eggs or handling raw meat could set you up for illness.\u00a0 Washing your hands before washing dishes is important.\u00a0 Even though everyone knows that they need to wash their hands after going to the bathroom, only 25% of Americans actually do it correctly or at all.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you sanitize your sink before washing dishes?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consider all of the things done in your kitchen sink in an average day.\u00a0 All the liquids poured down the drain, produced cleaned, etc..\u00a0 The average household has a cleaner toilet then kitchen sink.\u00a0 Sanitize it before washing to get your dishes the cleanest.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you eat at your desk at work?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/untitled.bmp\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3298\" style=\"margin: 3px; border: black 3px solid;\" title=\"untitled\" alt=\"untitled\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/untitled.bmp\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/a> Desktop dining can be lethal.\u00a0 Is your desk top clean?\u00a0 Have your refrigerated your lunch before eating it?\u00a0 Letting your perishables set out for more than two hours at room temperature can make you sick.\u00a0 \u00a0Is the microwave at work clean?\u00a0 For more tips on safe dining at work, check out The <a href=\"http:\/\/homefoodsafety.org\/pages\/tips\/tips\/officeeatingtips.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">American Dietetic Association\u2019s Food Safety <\/a>page.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Small problems can make many people sick, so practice vigilance when preparing meals, at home or away.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For helping spread the word about the importance of home food safety, I was entered into a drawing for a $15 Starbucks gift card and an iPad through Summertime Food Smarts, a contest run by the American Dietetic Association and ConAgra Foods&#8217; Home Food Safety Program.
