{"id":3284,"date":"2011-07-06T14:20:42","date_gmt":"2011-07-06T20:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=3284"},"modified":"2013-08-08T14:14:35","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T14:14:35","slug":"terrarium-gardening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/c\/terrarium-gardening\/","title":{"rendered":"Terrarium Gardening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week we planted dianthus flowers in terrariums.\u00a0 This was inexpensive for a few reasons.\u00a0 Our horticulturist was given 12 terrariums from a liquor store to use.\u00a0 They held small liquor bottles.\u00a0 It took me two days to remove the liquor stickers\u2014but they are very nice bowls.\u00a0 I was also able to use some left over OmaGro to fill them.\u00a0 This will also give the plants some well needed fertilizer to start them out.\u00a0 Passers-by think they are fish bowls!\u00a0 Others are impressed with our recycling abilities.<\/p>\n<p>The other cost savings is the time of year.\u00a0 Plants are clearanced out now\u2014I got four packs of plants (24) for $3.\u00a0 I picked flowering plants that were small, and could handle the terrarium environment.\u00a0 Small moss or cactus-like plants would also do well\u2014but weren\u2019t clearance out!\u00a0 Go with the flow I always say!<\/p>\n<p>While the children planted their plants, we discussed different places plants could grow, and how the environment really had<a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/July-6-blog-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3289\" style=\"margin: 3px; border: black 3px solid;\" title=\"July 6 blog 2\" alt=\"July 6 blog 2\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/July-6-blog-2.jpg\" width=\"295\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a>\u00a0a large affect on them.\u00a0 We also had to discuss why I had to put the chemical Sevin on the broccoli plants\u2014as the bugs were getting more than we were.\u00a0 We also needed to place a shade cover over our broccoli bed, as it was getting too much sun, and may not set on.\u00a0 I found a vent cover in the back room that we weren\u2019t using, so it will let filtered sun through and the rain\u2014just not direct July sun.\u00a0 Thank goodness for our horticulturists!\u00a0 More recycling.\u00a0 Total cost of today\u2019s adventure&#8211;$3.<\/p>\n<p>I also needed to use Sevin dust on the eggplant (which are growing nicely!), because the eggplant beetles were eating the leaves.\u00a0 The sun and heat and rain every few days REALLY helps the garden.\u00a0 I think this week is it for the lettuce, then we will replant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/July-6-blog-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3290 aligncenter\" style=\"margin: 3px;
