{"id":3271,"date":"2011-07-01T10:41:27","date_gmt":"2011-07-01T16:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=3271"},"modified":"2013-08-08T14:16:30","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T14:16:30","slug":"gardening-dilemmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/e\/gardening-dilemmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Gardening Dilemmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve had record rain and record heat\u2014and it\u2019s only July 1.\u00a0 As with everything in life\u2014it\u2019s always something!\u00a0 Last week we discussed fertilizer.\u00a0 To demonstrate how plants take up fertilizer and nutrients, the children made dots with markers on paper towels, and then they placed the end in a small bowl of water to watch the colors rise.\u00a0 It was an extremely simple way to demonstrate this principle.<\/p>\n<p>This week we harvested some of our radishes and more lettuce.\u00a0 The children were not fond of the radishes on their own, so they are trying a recipe of radishes and French onion dip blended on crackers.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to find kid friendly recipes for radishes.<\/p>\n<p>One thing we learned about raised bed gardening this week\u2014they are prone to animals snacking on the food as much as a garden in the ground.\u00a0 Some of our radishes were gnawed on by voles.\u00a0 These beds are on concrete, and about 4-6 inches tall.\u00a0 In direct sun.\u00a0 In the middle of a playground!\u00a0 Pretty gutsy animals!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/blog44.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3277\" style=\"margin: 3px;
