{"id":323,"date":"2008-09-29T20:13:06","date_gmt":"2008-09-30T02:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=323"},"modified":"2013-08-23T15:34:24","modified_gmt":"2013-08-23T15:34:24","slug":"its-apple-picking-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/e\/its-apple-picking-time\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Apple Picking Time!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my favorite memories growing up is our family trips to the apple orchard.\u00a0 Every fall, my parents would take my sister and me on the hour long drive to a pick-your-own apple orchard.\u00a0 We had a blast!\u00a0 We&#8217;d pack a picnic lunch and spend the day running through the trees trying to find the best apples.\u00a0 We&#8217;d collect several bushels of apples of all different types, taste testing along the way.<\/p>\n<p>This year, I was excited to share with my daughter my family&#8217;s tradition of apple picking.\u00a0 We went to a local orchard and while there, met a nice mom who&#8217;d brought her daughter and her daughter&#8217;s friends to pick some apples.\u00a0 They were about twelve years old.\u00a0 The girls were bubbling over with excitement as they filled their bags with apples.\u00a0 As they passed by us, I heard them telling each other all of the recipes they were going to make from their apples &#8211; apple crisp, apple pie, apple sauce&#8230;and their ideas kept coming.\u00a0 It&#8217;s amazing how a trip to the orchard can generate such enthusiasm for fruit!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"apples\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/apple.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pick-Your-Own Farms are a great way for kids to learn how their food grows.\u00a0\u00a0A child who typically doesn&#8217;t like to eat fruit is bound to give an apple a try if they&#8217;ve picked it themselves.<\/p>\n<p>At an orchard, you can learn\u00a0about the different types of apples and what they are best used for (i.e. eating raw or cooking).\u00a0 Not all apples taste the same. \u00a0Slice up some different apples for your kids to try.\u00a0 Have them shut their eyes and taste a slice of each type of apple to see which is their favorite.\u00a0 Then let them pick some of their favorite type.<\/p>\n<p>Keep the\u00a0enthusiasm for apples going when you\u00a0get home by having your kids help you make an apple crisp or baked apples.\u00a0 If you want your house to smell delicious, try this recipe for Country Apples.\u00a0 I made it using a 1 1\/2 quart slow cooker available at many stores for less than $10.\u00a0 It&#8217;s super easy and delicious!<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Country Apples<\/h2>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><\/em>Ingredients<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1 Tablespoon flour<\/p>\n<p>2 Tablespoons white sugar<\/p>\n<p>3\u00a0cups apples, peeled and sliced<\/p>\n<p>1\/8 to 1\/4 teaspoon cinnamon<\/p>\n<p>1\/3 cup oats, quick or old fashioned<\/p>\n<p>1\/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries<\/p>\n<p>1\/2 cup water<\/p>\n<p>1 Tablespoon butter, melted<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">2 Tablespoons brown sugar<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: inherit;
