{"id":3056,"date":"2011-04-24T19:50:09","date_gmt":"2011-04-25T01:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=3056"},"modified":"2013-08-08T15:04:09","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T15:04:09","slug":"teaching-cooking-is-important","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/nutrition-2\/teaching-cooking-is-important\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Cooking IS Important!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I teach healthy eating concepts.\u00a0 I am a dietitian.\u00a0 I believe you cannot teach nutrition without discussing food preparation!\u00a0 This has been a missed concept for many years by many nutrition experts.\u00a0\u00a0 Probably why we have been nicknamed food Nazi\u2019s!\u00a0 All foods do fit, and cooking IS important!<\/p>\n<p>I teach numerous cooking classes yearly\u2014to all ages\u2014kids through retired adults.\u00a0 All participants have one thing in common\u2014they must eat\u2014and they require something that tastes good, and is good for them.\u00a0 So I teach.\u00a0 I love to cook, and take great pride in my accomplishments.\u00a0 Now\u2014when something doesn\u2019t turn out\u2014then I\u2019m not so happy!\u00a0 So that would explain why the cooking industry (cook books, The Food Network, cooking magazines, cooking stores, etc\u2026) is so BIG.<\/p>\n<p>When I teach a class, I write the curriculum, purchase the groceries, set up the room, and provide all the handouts.\u00a0 I even clean up!\u00a0 My classes can be for 10 participants, or 75.\u00a0 No big deal\u2014it\u2019s part of my job\u2014and I do not have any minions to do the \u201csmall\u201d stuff.\u00a0 I love doing it.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I received the honor of being a Taste of Home Cooking finalist for their show.\u00a0 I got to help with the back stage food prep for the show\u2014then be on stage in front of 2200 people during the show to help.\u00a0 Now-the numbers were MUCH larger\u2014but the prep and cleanup were the same.\u00a0 The chefs running the program were in charge of making sure EVERYTHING was done.\u00a0 It was an incredible experience\u2014but the passion behind teaching individuals who were excited about cooking was the same as in my classes.\u00a0 There are many people who want to learn to prepare great meals easily.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I am always excited when I offer a class.\u00a0\u00a0 If we empower people to cook\u2014maybe we can solve a few health issues!\u00a0 Viva la cooking classes!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I teach healthy eating concepts.\u00a0 I am a dietitian.\u00a0 I believe you cannot teach nutrition without discussing food preparation!\u00a0 This has been a missed concept for many years by many nutrition experts.\u00a0\u00a0 Probably why we have been nicknamed food Nazi\u2019s!\u00a0 All foods do fit, and cooking IS important!
