{"id":2908,"date":"2011-02-02T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T14:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=2908"},"modified":"2013-08-08T15:24:33","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T15:24:33","slug":"cooking-with-kids-and-snow-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/e\/cooking-with-kids-and-snow-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooking with Kids and Snow Days!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The forecast is for 6-10 inches of snow and ice\u2014and I know I will be home with the kids again.\u00a0 Welcome to February in Nebraska!\u00a0 You can only let them watch so many movies and eventually they run out of homework.\u00a0 One project all of my kids have gotten into is cooking.\u00a0 They WILL learn how to feed themselves so that when they move out, they will not live in a drive-thru.\u00a0 I am really not worried.\u00a0 They all like to cook, especially the little guy.\u00a0 He has his own apron from the Culinary Institute in Napa that he puts on every night to help prepare dinner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: normal; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;\">Teaching kids to cook is like going to class.\u00a0 They learn math (measuring), science (how ingredients work), PE (someone has to do the dishes!), and religion (please God, let this turn out!).\u00a0 It\u2019s not just cooking\u2014it\u2019s being together in the one room of the house that everyone naturally congregates in.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/January-2011-069.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2915\" style=\"margin: 2px; border: black 1px solid;\" title=\"January 2011 069\" alt=\"January 2011 069\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/January-2011-069-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over Christmas break, Aunt Jean came to visit and brought me a wonderfully incredible crepe pan.\u00a0 If you are a foodie\u2014pans are EVERYTHING!\u00a0 It\u2019s like having the right tool for the\u00a0job.\u00a0 Anyway\u2014it\u2019s a wonderful pan.\u00a0 I can make crepes in it\u2014so you know the pans great!\u00a0 All the kids got into making crepes.\u00a0 We discussed that the <a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/\/Recipe\/basic-crepes\/Detail.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">recipe<\/a> was the same as\u00a0pancakes, without the leavening.\u00a0 We discussed fillings and made many\u2014savory and sweet.\u00a0 Eggs and mushrooms for the savory, and fruit, whipped cream, chocolate and sprinkles for the sweet.\u00a0 It took us less than 5 minutes to whip these up\u2014and everyone got a chance to make a few.\u00a0 It was great.\u00a0 How many 6- and 10-year-olds know how to make crepes confidently?!\u00a0 The wonderful thing is that I can call on the way home and put one of the kids in\u00a0 charge of dinner\u2014and it\u2019s started before I get home!\u00a0 They get a sense of accomplishment, and we all get dinner!\u00a0 What a win-win situation!\u00a0 Take some time to cook with your kids\u2014the mess is totally worth it!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;
