{"id":2100,"date":"2010-04-27T11:55:27","date_gmt":"2010-04-27T17:55:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=2100"},"modified":"2013-08-21T20:28:04","modified_gmt":"2013-08-21T20:28:04","slug":"getting-kids-to-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/e\/getting-kids-to-move\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Kids to Move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Healthy bodies perform better in school.\u00a0 They are better able to focus.\u00a0 It increases long term memory capabilities.\u00a0 It increases alertness and helps children think more clearly.\u00a0 Researchers have also found that there is a strong relationship between academic achievement and fitness scores. \u00a0We all know that exercise is good for everyone.\u00a0 So what\u2019s the problem?<\/p>\n<p>Today schools are very focused on academic achievement.\u00a0 Grades determine funding for schools and teachers\u2014they also determine scholarships.\u00a0 In my day (yes, I really am that old!), you had PE a few times per week.\u00a0 The amount of school minutes in an average week devoted to exercise currently has decreased to accommodate increased educational classes.\u00a0 We played ball at recess.\u00a0 We also were shoved outside on non-school days and told not to return until dinner time.\u00a0 We played ball and rode our bikes.\u00a0 Things have changed.\u00a0 Parents are afraid to let their kids play outside for fear of abduction.\u00a0\u00a0 Statistics show that the chances of abduction have NOT increased at all since I was a kid.\u00a0 The amounts of press these receive have.\u00a0 The press has helped with the perceived notion that the problem has gotten worse.\u00a0 Also, many new subdivisions do not have sidewalks to roller-skate of ride on.\u00a0 Kids live farther away from school and get rides\u2014only a small percentage of students walk or ride to school now.\u00a0 The reasons why kids get less exercise could fill a book.\u00a0 The same reasons are contributing to our weight problems.<\/p>\n<p>So\u2014many wise teachers have discovered that they can incorporate exercise into their school routine in the classroom.\u00a0 Short bouts of exercise decrease the amount of wiggles and disruptive behavior, and help the students to focus better.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be involved or long\u2014a few minutes will be enough to get back to classroom activities.\u00a0 St. Bernard Catholic School in Omaha, NE has integrated exercise into their normal classroom<a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2106\" style=\"margin: 3px; border: black 1px solid;\" title=\"Inside exercise\" alt=\"Inside exercise\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/6-300x130.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a>\u00a0activities.\u00a0 The principle has given each teacher a ring of cards with short exercise ideas on them.\u00a0 Tossing a ball while studying spelling words, rolling a dice to see how many jumping jacks a class could do, or doing the chicken dance.\u00a0 These activities only take a few minutes\u2014but have really done a lot to get the kids minds refocused on their work\u2014and the students love it!\u00a0 Who wouldn\u2019t like to do the chicken dance in the middle of a REALLY long board meeting!?\u00a0 It only takes one person to get the ball rolling (sorry\u2014no pun intended!) in your school\u2014so get started today.\u00a0 It is never too late!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">[formidable id=2 title=true]<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Healthy bodies perform better in school.\u00a0 They are better able to focus.\u00a0 It increases long term memory capabilities.\u00a0 It increases alertness and helps children think more clearly.\u00a0 Researchers have also found that there is a strong relationship between academic achievement and fitness scores. \u00a0We all know that exercise is good for everyone.\u00a0 So what\u2019s the problem?
