{"id":1784,"date":"2010-01-12T08:00:35","date_gmt":"2010-01-12T14:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=1784"},"modified":"2013-08-21T21:23:34","modified_gmt":"2013-08-21T21:23:34","slug":"winter-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/e\/winter-exercise\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s the first part of January, 2010, and there is 26-plus inches of snow on the ground here.\u00a0 The wind chill is 20\u2070 below zero.\u00a0\u00a0 Do you feel like exercising?\u00a0 Most people would hole up on the couch with a blanket and a bag of munchies and call it a day!\u00a0 Sometimes that\u2019s alright.\u00a0 What about those resolutions to exercise more?\u00a0 Maybe you exercise three or more times per week now, but the treadmill is starting to look like the dreadmill!\u00a0 I know that we use ours three times per week, and it\u2019s starting to get OLD!\u00a0 What you need are some alternatives to your normal exercise routine (or a new exercise start).<\/p>\n<p>The secret to exercise is making it fun.\u00a0 If you are starting a new exercise program, you may need to do it for a few weeks before it becomes \u201cfun\u201d and not a \u201cmust.\u201d\u00a0 If you are already exercising, try something new.\u00a0 Doing different types of exercise throughout the week will help stimulate different muscle groups and your mind.\u00a0 It also makes you feel better.<\/p>\n<p>So\u2014here are a few secrets that I have discovered for exercising in the winter when you live in Siberia! (Really, I live in Nebraska\u2014but it feels like Siberia.)<a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/blog-3-089.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 3px; border: black 1px solid;\" title=\"blog 3 089\" alt=\"blog 3 089\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/blog-3-089-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Scooping is great exercise!\u00a0 And it keeps you from swearing after you have scooped snow for the hundredth time!\u00a0 It also burns mega calories\u2014just do it wisely, and don\u2019t overdo it.<\/li>\n<li>Kids love to sled in the winter.\u00a0 You have snow\u2014so go sledding with your kids.\u00a0 Its great exercise walking up the hill over and over again\u2014and your kids will love that you\u2019ve tapped into your inner child again.<\/li>\n<li>Rent\/purchase new exercise videos.\u00a0 My secret is to purchase them at the local thrift store.\u00a0 I\u2019ve fallen in love with Billy Blanks and even Richard Simmons!\u00a0 Denise Austin is fun, and even some of those Pilates videos make me sweat!\u00a0 The nice thing is that they are usually around $1, and if I don\u2019t like them\u2014they go in the garage sale pile.\u00a0 The dollar store sometimes carries some wild videos too!<\/li>\n<li>Exercise with your kids.\u00a0 Nothing stimulates you to work harder than seeing your five-year-old doing kick-boxing better than you.\u00a0 \u00a0Turn up the tunes and dance with them, or your spouse.\u00a0 It usually ends in a big bout of laughter\u2014but its still exercise.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0When all else fails\u2014clean your house.\u00a0 Housework can be aerobic.\u00a0 Stretching to clean cobwebs, vacuuming, going up and down stairs to do laundry, mopping\u2014all ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/blog2010-075.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1790 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 3px;
