{"id":1619,"date":"2009-12-01T08:00:54","date_gmt":"2009-12-01T14:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/wordpress\/?p=1619"},"modified":"2013-08-21T21:33:57","modified_gmt":"2013-08-21T21:33:57","slug":"weight-loss-and-the-holidays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nutritionknowhow.org\/blog\/g\/weight-loss-and-the-holidays\/","title":{"rendered":"Weight Loss and the Holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanksgiving and Halloween are over.\u00a0 I survived with out any weight gain and actually lost weight.\u00a0 This is not the norm. The average weight gain between Halloween and New Years is about a pound or more.\u00a0 That doesn&#8217;t sound like much&#8211;but over the years&#8211;this really adds up!\u00a0 Most people try to maintain their weight during this plentiful food time.\u00a0 Parties, cookies, treats, abnormal hours and schedules.\u00a0 These all work against us when we are trying to eat healthy.\u00a0 What&#8217;s a foodie to do?<\/p>\n<p>My biggest problem is baking.\u00a0 I bake for weeks for the holidays.\u00a0 It all looks good&#8211;whether it&#8217;s baked or not.\u00a0 I am trying different things to avoid &#8220;sampling&#8221; this and that.\u00a0 Every little sample can add a new size to my jeans if I don&#8217;t watch it!\u00a0 I have found that the following suggestions work, and may help you maintain, or even lose weight over this holiday season!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get lots of exercise.\u00a0 Shopping is walking.\u00a0 Walking is exercise.\u00a0 Go for a walk after a big meal.\u00a0 Exercise before going to a party.\u00a0 Play outside with the kids.\u00a0 Dancing to lively music while cleaning your house is exercise.\u00a0 Just move.\u00a0 Try to increase the amount you move in a day if you are going to a party in the evening.<\/li>\n<li>Fill up on fiber.\u00a0 Foods with a high fiber content are filling, and usually lower in calories and fat.\u00a0 Try noshing on fat free popcorn, or carrot and celery sticks and oranges.\u00a0 I try to keep fruit and Fiber Plus bars with me.\u00a0 They are low in calories, high in fiber, and fill me up.<\/li>\n<li>Drink water.\u00a0 Lots of it.\u00a0 Tea, coffee, diet pop, all add to your fluid intake; just don&#8217;t add a lot of sugar and cream.\u00a0 Being hydrated makes you feel better&#8211;and fills you up.<\/li>\n<li>Moderation.\u00a0 No one ever died from eating just one meal.\u00a0 Try small portions of foods you like.\u00a0 Avoid &#8220;everyday&#8221; foods.\u00a0 Dinner rolls taste the same on Thanksgiving as they do on Tuesday.\u00a0 Pass on the dinner rolls and have a serving of Aunt Emma&#8217;s really gooey sweet potatoes.\u00a0 They won&#8217;t be around on Tuesday.<\/li>\n<li>Weigh yourself regularly.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not saying be\u00a0 a slave to the scale.\u00a0 Maybe once or twice a week.\u00a0 Unfortunately, ignorance is not bliss if you are steadily gaining and you don&#8217;t come to grips with it.\u00a0 The weight is not magically going to go away if you don&#8217;t weigh yourself.\u00a0 Tight jeans are usually a good indicator something has happened!<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t beat yourself up if you went overboard.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just one meal or one party.\u00a0 Get back on the healthy eating train at the next meal.\u00a0 If you can eat healthy 90% of the time, you are doing really well.<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy yourself.\u00a0 If you are going to eat something decadent that makes you feel naughty&#8211;eat it slowly and savor it.\u00a0 Snarfing it down will not make it as enjoyable as it could be.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally&#8211;take care of yourself.\u00a0 Have you made any changes since my last entry?\u00a0 I have to remind myself everyday that 5 minutes is good for me.\u00a0 Maybe next week I&#8217;ll try ten!\u00a0 By the way&#8211;for those that are keeping count, I have lost 24 3\/4 pounds so far.\u00a0 If it were easy, we&#8217;d all be a model.\u00a0 Health is totally worth it!\u00a0 Keep up the good work yourself!\u00a0 Happy Holidays.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanksgiving and Halloween are over.\u00a0 I survived with out any weight gain and actually lost weight.\u00a0 This is not the norm.
