One in six children in Nebraska and Iowa is food insecure, meaning they don’t always know where their next meal is coming from.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension joined the Hunger Free Heartland (HFH) Initiative which began in 2009. This initiative consists of a group of agencies, local business, organizations and government entities that have come together to end childhood hunger in the Omaha and Council Bluffs area.
HFH is about mobilizing forces locally to address the issue of ending childhood hunger in the metro area. We realize that ending childhood hunger will not be fixed overnight, but we will work on ending childhood hunger one meal at a time. Our first year priority will be to ensure that every child has breakfast in 2011.
UNL Extension is providing food and nutrition education expertise to this effort. In 2011 we will be educating our community about the importance of breakfast and how everyone can easily start their day with a nutritious breakfast.
